Reconciliation and Celebrating Aboriginal Culture through Art

Picture
During the school holidays, Aboriginal artist Scott Rathman painted a series of planter boxes now displayed in the nature play area. This project forms part of the OSHC and Ardtornish Primary School’s Reconciliation Action Plan, aiming to celebrate and visually express Aboriginal culture.
Before painting, Scott ran a workshop with students in Room 29, helping them explore their personal connection to Ardtornish and understand how Aboriginal art uses symbols to communicate values and ideas. Together, they co-designed three artworks—each one now featured on a separate planter box.

The first design, created with the children, symbolises the support students receive from staff. This design consists of two circles cradled by a gentle crescent - this is seen as strength of mentorship.
The larger lower circle represents the student, grounded in curiosity; the crescent shape above is the teacher's guiding arm holding space for growth. The smaller circle is the light of knowledge passed on. Together they evoke the moment of shared discovery, a teacher lifting a student up, encouraging them to reach their circle of understanding.

The second design represents friendship, it’s woven arcs and dots form a single network; supporting arms encircling a central point. Each arc and dot pairing stands for a student, and their embracing curves illustrate how friendships loop around us, holding us steady, sharing laughter and creating a safe space to be ourselves.
In this design, students celebrated the power of peer connection, that feeling of belonging when you know you are centered in a circle of people who truly see you.

The third design features three ascending arches lifting a central circle, representing the different layers of support students feel at Ardtornish, with staff, their family and the broader community.
As these layers lift upward, they carry the student (circle) toward their ambitions. The upward sweep embodies both stability and momentum - a reminder that, at Ardtornish, support isn't static; it is an ever rising tide that holds you steady.

Together, these symbols--Mentorship, Friendship, and Community Support—form a visual map of what matters most to Ardtornish children. Infused into our Indigenous Native Plant Trail, the planter boxes anchor the plants in a garden rich with meaning and grounded in community values that help every child grow.

The Golden Bin Award – Encouraging Clean and Tidy Spaces!

At Ardtornish Primary School, we are always looking for fun and positive ways to look after our school environment—and that’s where the Golden Bin Award comes in!
Each week, the class that keeps their learning space the cleanest and free from rubbish is announced at assembly as the winner of the Golden Bin Award. The winning class proudly takes home the Golden Bin trophy for the week and enjoys a special bonus lesson in our amazing school gym!
The purpose of the Golden Bin Award is to encourage everyone to take pride in their surroundings, keep our school yard tidy, and work together as a team to maintain a clean and welcoming classroom.
It’s a fun and friendly competition that helps make our school a better place for everyone. So keep those spaces clean, bins used, and teamwork strong—your class could be the next to take home the Golden Bin!
The winner of The Golden Bin Award at the end of Term 1 was Room 23. Well Done Miss Wendy’s class, you have done an amazing job keeping our school clean and litter free!

Last term in Geography, we focused on learning about the floral emblem of South Australia, which is the striking and unique Sturt Desert Pea. As part of our studies, we explored its appearance, where it grows, and its significance to the region.
The flower, known for its vivid red petals and distinctive dark centre, really captured our attention. To reflect what we had learned and express our own interpretations, we created artwork inspired by the Sturt Desert Pea. Each of us produced individual pieces based on our impressions of the flower. It was a creative and engaging way to connect what we learned in Geography with visual art.
