Reading Mentors: Effective Cross Age Learning Support
Pictured here is - Audrey, Lia, Oliver, Donovan, Rin and Adelyn
At Ardtornish we foster a community where members encourage and support each other, and the Reading Mentor program is a perfect example of how all students in Years 5 & 6 have an opportunity to contribute to building cross year level relationships, while helping younger students to develop their confidence and skills as readers.
Before taking on the role of a reading tutor, the year 5 and 6 students were taught how to support and encourage beginning readers to be successful by: talking about the book before they start to read, encouraging them to sound out any unknown words they may encounter and asking them questions, to clarify their comprehension, when the story is completed. During each session the Reading Mentors use their Chromebooks to record the feedback they give to the students along with the title and genre of the books they read. These notes are completed in a Google Forms document and are immediately available to the student’s classroom teacher. Through this process, younger students build not only their confidence as ‘readers’ but also their confidence mixing with older students who they come to see as supportive and friendly. Since last year students reading fluency levels have been monitored using the 'ORF (Oral Reading Fluency) assessment,' a brief one-minute process used to regularly detect risk and monitor the development of early literacy and early reading skills from R-7. By examining word reading fluency, the ORF assessment helps identify students with deficiencies in decoding, accuracy and fluency. Reading mentors provide students with additional reading support. The older mentors encourage the students they are paired with to improve their reading pace and expression, abilities that build the student's skill. The mentors encourage students to use effective reading strategies, expand their vocabularies, enhance their understanding of various text types, and improve their comprehension skills. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Read Write Inc. Independent GroupThis group of Year 1 and 2 students meet in the library, during the daily Read Write Inc. time. Having successfully completed the basic elements of the program, they are now ready to apply their extensive phonics skills to become independent readers and writers.
In lessons with Mrs. Moore and Mr. Hansen they learn the skills necessary to effectively select their own books to read and write different genres. In their sessions they use additional technologies and software, such as iPads and the ‘Canva’ digital publishing program to produce and publish their own stories. Pictured here is Juno and Noah who are learning to outline a narrative story, by doing multiple drafts of their text to improve its clarity. |
