Learning to play an instrument is a valuable investment in a student's intellectual development. The skills and abilities acquired through playing a musical instrument are transferrable across a wide range of academic pursuits. Participating in orchestral settings, further enhances these skills. Therefore, the twenty beginner music students at Ardtornish, in their first or second year of instruction, were fortunate to attend a workshop at Modbury High last week to experience what it is like to play in an ensemble.
Being part of an ensemble differs significantly from regular lessons where individuals control their sessions. As ensemble players, students are challenged to concentrate fully and synchronize with the group. Students played various instruments including flute, clarinet, saxophone, percussion, trumpet, and trombone, and experienced the challenges and rewards of engaging in a collective performance. Each student had a unique part to contribute to the overall harmony; mostly! Learning to count bars of rest was essential to their success, while they watched for their sections opportunity to take the lead. The workshop also taught students patience, as they waited for the conductor to work with different sections, and synchronize them, so the ensemble produced a cohesive sound. Looking ahead, I anticipate inviting these beginner students to join our school band later this year. This will effectively double our band's size and improve its sound! Special thanks to Anna for transporting our instruments, and to Kym, Danielle, and other parents who accompanied us on our walk to Modbury High, on a day that threatened us with rain, and supported our "performance" at the end. Traffic Incident Update
We would like to inform you, that when a student crossed Lutyens Avenue on Wednesday they suffered an injury in a motor vehicle accident and was taken to hospital by ambulance. Luckily, they only experienced some bruising and a few scrapes and were released from hospital the next day. We understand that such an incident can be distressing for other students and their families, if they witnessed the event or hear about it. If you have concerns that your child may have been impacted by this incident, please do not hesitate to contact Natalie Hall (Wellbeing Leader) or Mark Hansen, Principal. Such an incident is a good reminder to us all of how important it is to continually reinforce road safety procedures with children. It is therefore timely that early next term all students from R-6 will be involved in the RAA 'Street Smart Program' to learn more about road safety. Mark Hansen Congratulations

This term students in Room 11 learnt scientific drawing skills. Firstly, they attempted to draw an elephant from memory. Then they learnt a series of techniques used by Jenni Thurmer, a SA Museum illustrator, to improve their illustrations and make them more accurate.
Students studied photographs of elephants to help them better understand the correct proportions and details needed to do an accurate drawing. You can see by their second drawings of the elephant, how much they improved through using this process. To learn more about the SA Museum Scientific Illustration resource click on this link
