Book Week and Student Writers’ Week jointly promoting a love of literature
At Ardtornish we are dedicated to developing students as both readers and writers. This year’s Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA) Book Week theme was Book an Adventure. The week began with two lively sessions from the improv theatre group, Story Snorts. Their storytelling was created right before the students’ eyes, using student suggestions to shape hilarious and imaginative adventures. It was a wonderful way to kick off Book Week, showing children how stories can grow and change in exciting ways and supported students to write better stories for our ‘Student Writers Week’ celebration.
A key feature of our Students’ Writers Week is the opportunity for students to read and review each other’s work. This practice not only encourages careful reading but also helps students to develop a deeper appreciation for the creativity of their peers. Pictured are several of our student authors holding their own books and the entry box, which contains reviews of books written by students across the school. At our awards assembly, four reviews are drawn at random. Each reviewer receives a prize, as does the student whose book they reviewed. Throughout Book Week, the library was transformed into an “adventure zone” with decorations and activities such as an adventure-themed Kahoot quiz and a treasure hunt. An art competition based on the theme and the 2025 CBCA shortlisted books also inspired some amazing entries. Fourteen of our classes took part, in the CBCA Shadow Judging program. This involved reading and discussing the Notable and Shortlisted books in depth, before casting their own votes for Book of the Year. Shadow Judging gives students a voice in the national conversation about children’s literature and builds their appreciation for what makes a story powerful, memorable, and award-worthy. Students eagerly compared the national results with their own votes. The week concluded with our Book Week Assembly. Each class, paired with their buddy class, performed the 2025 CBCA theme or one of the notable or shortlisted books. These performances were full of energy, creativity, and laughter, showcasing the way literature can be brought to life through drama, song, and movement. Everyone was impressed by how students embraced their stories and shared them confidently. Book Week 2025 was a true celebration of reading, creativity, and community. From imaginative theatre and adventurous library activities to thoughtful Shadow Judging and joyful assembly performances, our students were inspired to see books not just as stories on a page, but as adventures waiting to be explored. |

Our Year 6 Aerobics Team “Teenage Dream” had the incredible opportunity to represent Ardtornish Primary School at the FISAF Nationals on the Gold Coast this year. Despite missing two team members, who were unable to attend, the team showcased their determination and passion after a phenomenal season, which saw them take home two gold medals at both the Super Series and State competitions.
Competing against 13 other teams in the Year 6 Phase 1 Category, our Students they gave it their all. Team spirit was high and though there were plenty of nerves backstage, they smashed their performance out on stage. While they didn't place in the top three, the team proudly finished 7th in the nation — an outstanding achievement in a tough field. More importantly, they closed out their final year of school dance as State Champions, ending their season on a high note. Many of these girls have been dancing together since their first year in the Aerobics program, and it's been incredible to watch their friendship and teamwork grow over the years. Our younger Aerobics teams (Jazz Queens and Dancing Dreamers) were also successful with both improving on their scores from Super Series to States and being invited to Nationals but not all able to attend. Our Primary and Future Legends Cheer Teams performed extremely well with amazing scores and medal worthy routines. The Future Legends Team Shining Stars came second at Regionals and achieved a silver medal States competitions, with the Upper Primary Team Cheer Divas coming second at Regionals and working up to a gold medal performance at States beating their regional score significantly! Our Hip Hop and Theatrical Teams were also successful achieving high scores, with Hip Hop “Pay Up” placing first at both Regionals and States (State Champions) and Theatrical “Beach Crazy” placing first at Regionals and second at States. The Cheer, Hip Hop and Theatrical teams were all invited to attend Nationals in Tasmania, which was a huge honour, although unfortunately we were unable to attend this time. All of our dance teams should feel incredibly proud of what they’ve achieved this year – we certainly do! A huge shout and thank you out goes to all the competitors, the coaches, the dance committee, the parents/guardians and the school staff involved for all their effort, hard work and support during the season. The Hahndorf Farm Barn
Room 21
On Monday 8th September Rooms 20, 21 and 22 went to The Hahndorf Farm Barn for a day filled with fun!
We were able to cuddle some baby animals, some of us even lucky enough to bottle feed the lambs. We also had the opportunity to milk Daisy the cow and hand feed some very hungry goats. After lunch we went into the wildlife area with some deer, goats, donkeys and a very cheeky alpaca! To end the day, we were able to touch 3 lizards and 1 python at the reptile show!
It was an absolutely fantastic day and we are so grateful to our parent and SSO helpers that came and enjoyed the day with us.
