Student Wellbeing is on the Rise at Ardtornish

This year, we’re excited to share the positive results of the 2024 Wellbeing and Engagement Collection (WEC) Survey, which measures how students feel about their wellbeing inside and outside of school. This survey provides an invaluable opportunity for students across South Australia in Years 4 to 12 to have their voices heard, and we’re proud to report that 207 of our 209 eligible students participated this year.
Here’s a summary of our school’s results and improvements compared to last year:
  • Happiness: We saw a 7% increase in the happiness domain, with 92% of our students reporting a general feeling of contentment.
  • Optimism: Up by 6%, with 88% of students reporting they have more good days than bad and are generally happy with life.
  • Sadness: A 5% reduction in sadness, showing that students are feeling less worried and upset.
  • Worry Levels: 82% of our students report worrying little to none.
  • School Connectedness: Up by 11%, reflecting students’ belief that they have supportive adults at school.
  • Cognitive Engagement: 88% of students show medium to high cognitive engagement, meaning they persist through learning challenges.

How Our School Compares to the State:
  • Supportive Adult Relationships: 76% of our students have an adult at school who is important to them, compared to the state average of 73%.
  • Sense of Belonging: 71% of our students feel connected to the school, exceeding the state average of 67%.

What These Results Mean for Ardtornish Primary School
Our positive WEC results reflect the commitment of our entire school community to supporting students’ emotional wellbeing and social development by implementing a range of programs including, the ‘Zones of Regulation,’ to help students understand and manage their emotions, the PALs Play at Lunchtime and Buddy class programmes, to increase positive interactions between students across year levels and an active SRC to give students a strong voice in the life of the school. By explicitly teaching all students to use our “How to Handle a Problem” procedures we are also empowering them to solve problems independently or seek help when needed. Our clearly stated core values of ‘Be Kind, Show Respect, Aim High, and Bounce Back,’ are continually promoted across the school and work to foster a strong sense of social connectedness and engagement in learning.
These survey results are a testament to the collaborative efforts of our staff, students, and families to  build a supportive, connected, and thriving school environment.
If you have any questions or concerns about your child’s wellbeing, please don’t hesitate to reach out to their classroom teacher, myself, or any member of our leadership team. We are here to support every member of our school community.
Natalie Hall - Student Wellbeing Leader.

Ardtornish Primary School took part in Remembrance Day observances on 11/11/24, with all students showing deep respect. The students were mindful of the significance of the day and participated thoughtfully, honoring those who have served and sacrificed. Their conduct reflected a genuine understanding of the importance of remembering and paying tribute to the sacrifices made by others.

Kiss and Drop Zone
Please remember the areas dedicated to Kiss and Drop zones on both Lutyens and Saarinen Avenue are for two minutes only!  That give parents time to drop off or pick up students at before school and after school times.  The Tea Tree Gully Council regularly patrol these areas.  If you are parked there for longer than the two minutes, they will issue you with a fine of about $70 each time!
If there are no two minute parking spots, please continue on and go around the block if necessary.  Under no circumstances should anybody be parking across the school crossing.
Yesterday there were two near misses, where cars are parked in the middle of the road causing more congestion and danger to our students.
Also remember that we have a walk crossing for ALL students.  We often see students (and parents) crossing a few metres each side of the crossing.  We should be encouraging students to follow road rules for their own safety.

Instrumental Music
Please ensure that all Instrumental Music instruments (flute/clarinet/trumpet/saxophone/trombone) are returned by the end of week 8 for stocktake, cleaning and repairs.
If students wish to have their instrument over the summer school break, please let Anne O'Dea know  before the end of week 7 to arrange this with Instrumental Music.
All instruments hired by Yr.6 students must be returned.
Expressions of interest for new students in 2025 will come out soon.

Class Placement Process for 2025
This term we commence the complex process of establishing classes for 2025. Accurate enrolment numbers are essential for determining the configuration of year level classes. Therefore if your family is considering moving, it is important that you let us know now.  Your new school also needs this information.
Even if your plans are still tentative, tell the front office, as this will allow us to plan a range of contingencies. Please inform the front office by email [email protected], phone call 8264 8099 or by text message to  0447 467 152.

This week in Room 24, in honour of Remembrance Day, the Year 1 students have been making beautiful red poppies. These poppies help us remember all the brave men and women who served in the military to keep us safe.
The children learned about the significance of the poppy flower and how it symbolises peace and remembrance. It was a special time for the students to reflect and show respect for those who have helped protect our country.
