Terrific Kids Acknowledged at our Assembly

Picture
Every year Kiwanis, a global organization of volunteers dedicated to improving the world, one child and one community at a time, presents the‘Terrific Kids’ awards in our school, sponsored by Golden Grove shopping centre.
Terrific Kids is a student recognition program that promotes character development, self esteem and perseverance.  "Terrific" is an acronym for Thoughtful, Enthusiastic, Respectful, Responsible, Inclusive, Friendly, Inquisitive and Caring".
A Terrific Kid is also a student who embodies our school values of Kindness, Respect, Aiming High, and Bouncing Back. The award is not linked to academic achievement but instead it reflects the student’s ability to make our school a happy and friendly place to be.
Only one student is selected for an award at each year level. The process of selecting a year level recipient occurs in a staff meeting where staff discuss the values and qualities that each child displays. This is a difficult process as many students are potentially worthy of this honour. Hence being a recipient of one of these awards is a great achievement. A ‘Terrific Kid’ award is therefore an acknowledgement of the positive contribution that a student is making to our school. Invariably Terrific kids are students who are respected by their peers and teachers alike as they always get along well with others and work in a cooperative manner in the classroom.

Terrific Principal Acknowledged in the Advertiser

Picture
On Monday ‘The Advertiser’ newspaper listed 20 of the most influential principals in South Australia. We are very proud of the fact that our Principal Mark Hansen was on this list as the 17th.

Thirteen Private school principals were listed. Some leading schools with fees of $42,000 for year 12 tuition, along with 6 public school Principals. Those named all lead either High Schools or R-12 campus. Mark was the only Primary School Principal represented.
Mark was identified as a Principal who sets a high standard for education because of the work he has done over many years promoting effective literacy instruction and especially the use of synthetic phonics to teach reading. Mark spent six months back in 2018 Introducing the Phonics check across the state.
He designed the teacher training program and delivered it to Year 1 teachers in every region of South Australia. Many other schools have sent staff to Ardtornish to see how we teach reading, using Read Write Inc.
They then made significant changes to their reading programs. Hence Mark has made a positive contribution not only to our school but many other schools in SA.

Are you interested in playing school sport in 2025?
If we have enough interest and parent support to form a team in any sporting area, in any age group, the school will support the formation of a team or teams where there is an appropriate competition to enter. Please indicate your interest in joining a team - teams cannot be formed without parent volunteer support.
Ticking the appropriate boxes will allow us to email you with the latest information on the sports you are interested in and update you if we can create a team, when trials begin, costs involved and any other processes involved.

The massive tree near the groundsman's shed was carefully removed yesterday and being relocated to the new elephant enclosure at Monarto Zoo. It’s such a fantastic way to give the tree a second life while enhancing the elephants' new environment. How cool is that!

As the festive season approaches, our class is buzzing with excitement and eco-friendly creativity! This year, our end-of-year activities are all about celebrating the holidays while caring for the planet.
A highlight of the season is the creation of Christmas trees crafted from old wooden pallets. These unique and artistic trees will soon be displayed near the Gully Church for everyone in the community to enjoy.

Our students are also turning everyday items into festive decorations. From transforming donated fabrics into colourful tinsel, to crafting beautiful wreaths out of old coat hangers, the creativity on display is truly inspiring. We’re even making enchanting snow globes using old jars!
These activities not only spread holiday cheer but also teach our students the importance of reusing materials and reducing waste. We are proud of their innovative ideas and teamwork.
