DRAFT Policy on Student use of Mobile Phones and Personal DevicesThe Governing Council has reviewed and updated our policy to provide direction to students, educators and families about managing mobile phones and other digital devices that students choose to bring to school. This draft policy will be finalised early next term after gaining parent feedback. If you would like to give feedback on this policy, please email your ideas to [email protected] by 27th April 2021. The policy applies while students are at school, or attending an authorised school activity such as an excursion, during school hours.
Go here to see the full draft policy on our website. Digital devices include, but are not limited to, smartwatches, tablets or laptops that are not part of a separate ‘Bring Your Own Device’ arrangement. The department’s position is that primary aged students cannot use their mobile phones and personal devices (including smartwatches) at school during school hours. The department and the school recognise that there are legitimate reasons for students to bring a mobile phone or personal device to school. This may include to ensure their safety while travelling and so parents can contact them outside of school hours. However, during the school day students are not permitted to access or use their mobile phones or other personal devices for communication. Students must switch off or mute their devices before storing them at the beginning of the school day. They will not be able to access their device until they have left their classroom at the end of the school day. At this time, as well as any other time, they cannot share screens with other students while on school grounds. If students bring devices to school, they must take personal responsibility for their safe storage. We recommend that they are switched off and kept in bags with a lockable compartment. Teachers do not have to take responsibility for storing devices. __________________________________________________________________________________________ If the student does not comply with school processes If a student uses their mobile phone or electronic device to communicate with others, film or take photos, without teacher permission, during the day, the device will be confiscated. The device will be stored in the front office, and a member of the leadership team will be notified. Parents/ carers will be contacted by leadership to inform them of what has happened. __________________________________________________________________________________________ The school will consider requests for exemptions from the policy from parents on a case-by-case basis and ensure exemptions are documented. Any student personal devices handed in for staff care are stored in a secure location in the office and are returned to the student or their parent. Parents are expected to support the implementation of the school’s policy, including the consequences for non-compliance as they support their child to use their mobile phone (or other personal device) in a safe, responsible and respectful way. |

‘I’m bored!’ you might hear from your children over the school holidays. There are so many different activities students can do over the break, but I am sure using their devices to access social media will be a top pick. Be sure to monitor what your children on their devices and the time spent on electronics. Most social media sites are designed for users over the age of 13. Be sure to check the recommended age for the apps your child is using. Refer to the image provided by rechout.com for 5 Top tips on how to monitor social media use. https://www.esafety.gov.au/parents/skills-advice/are-they-old-enough is a fantastic webpage to access for further information too. Take care and enjoy the school holidays. Term Two Program
Hi, we are now preparing the Term Two program. There will be a couple of events for men and the young children in their care – not sure what yet – perhaps a Saturday am cycle and picnic early in the term and a twilight walk with torches when it is really dark in June! Join us on Friday assembly for coffee in the Community Room. Grow Up Smiling Dental Outreach will also be visiting. In early May. Registrations are available from the Children’s Centre and will be sent to current clients. A second, Thursday, Ardtornish Playgroup will be running as well as the usual Friday group.
