A Great Start to the YearThe school year has begun in a smooth and effective manner thanks to the enormous amount of work teachers and support staff undertook to prepare for the first days back. Staff officially started back on Wednesday 20th January when they all attended a full day of professional learning focussed on developing student’s multiplicative thinking. Multiplicative thinking is the ability of a child to move beyond additive thinking and to better understand the relationships between numbers so they can confidently multiply and divide numbers and understand ratios, fractions, decimals and percentages etc. Developing multiplicative thinking is a complex endeavour and can take students many years to master so staff are committed to providing students with a range of experiences that can best support them to be successful as a part of our school’s Improvement Plan to lift student achievement in mathematics.
The upcoming Pupil Free Day on 15th February will focus on another of our school’s improvement goals which is to improve every child’s writing skills. On this day staff will be undertaking training in how to use the Brightpath Writing Assessment Tool to score students abilities to write Information Report Texts and then provide them with targeted support to enhance their skills. Feedback from our Acquaintance Nights was very positive and many parents had an opportunity for the first time to see our wonderful new temporary buildings. At present we are working with the project manager to have additional paving constructed along the oval to provide a safe pathway in readiness for winter rains. Redevelopment Update Last year, tenders for the construction of our new building, based on the original design, came in at about $500,000 over budget. As a result of this, a decision had to be made by the school to either scale back the design, or lose some vital elements, or to commit to contributing additional funds from our own resources. After undertaking an audit of the schools ongoing finances the Governing Council decided to commit to a loan to cover the shortfall and the project is now continuing without having to sacrifice any of the features we originally requested. Tweaks to the original design, made with the inclusion of these additional funds have enabled us to include decking outside each classroom which will create a fantastic flow from inside to outside the classrooms, as shown in the accompanying drawing. As yet we do not have a firm timeline for the completion of the buildings but a tentative date is the end of Term 3. New Governing Council formed for 2021
One new member joined our existing council on Tuesday night to form our 2021 Governing Council while four existing members extended their tenures. Immediately following the election of members, portfolio roles were assigned to each person and Corinne Walding, (pictured here) was unanimously elected to the role of Chairperson. Our portfolio committee members are: Jenni Frigo: Secretary, Joanne Burkert: Treasurer, Rhonda Possingham: Canteen, Alanna Little: Grounds, Arran MacPherson: Community Liaison, Amanda Holland: Education, Kathryn Johns: Sport, Mary-Anne Richards: Deputy Chair and FACE. The first Governing Council meeting for the year will be held on Mon 22nd Feb after which parents will receive an invitation inviting them to join one of our school’s portfolio groups. These groups give parents an opportunity to contribute to the life of the school, as members of the committees. |
