Autism Acceptance Month - April 1 - April 30
April is Autism Month. This is about raising awareness, acceptance, and inclusion surrounding autism. More than 205,000 Australians are autistic and 1 in 4 Australians have a family member on the autism spectrum.
April 2 is World Autism Awareness Day. This day aims to highlight the need to help improve the quality of life of people with autism so they can lead full and meaningful lives. How will we be acknowledging Autism Acceptance Month here at Ardtornish? You will see information about Autism on display around the school including in the front office and on the window of the Wellbeing Room. Staff will also be provided with information to share with their students and activities they can complete with their class around autism and inclusivity. Autism Acceptance Parents & Friends Afternoon Tea Please join us for an afternoon tea in the school library on Wednesday April 10th at 2:00pm. We will share aspects of classroom programs and some useful autism resources/contacts whilst enjoying a cuppa and a chat. Please RSVP by clicking this link https://forms.office.com/r/jS3cqt1YiL or scanning the QR code below or contacting the school office. What is the Autism Inclusion Teacher role? AIT’s are given time each week in their AIT roles to focus on strengthening our school community’s inclusion of students on the autism spectrum. The Department for Education provides an Autism Inclusion Multidisciplinary (AIM) team to support them in the AIT roles (Primary and Secondary respectively). The team includes senior advisor educators, developmental educators, psychologists, occupational therapists, speech pathologists, and Aboriginal cultural project officers. The information from the AIM team is evidence-based and informed by the autistic and autism community. The role of an AIT is to pass on information, resources, and training they receive from the AIM team to other staff. Natalie Hall is our AIT teacher this year. If you have any questions or want to chat, she can be contacted via email at [email protected] or by phone at the school 08 8264 8099. Natalie is in the Wellbeing Room on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays but this is not the only time she can be available for meetings or conversations. Feel free to contact her and organise a time to talk. |
