Zones of Regulation at Ardtornish Primary SchoolIn term one, we started our journey using the Zones of Regulation. This term we will continue our Zones of Regulation journey by our staff engaging in training and development with an Occupational Therapist from the Department of Education. The Zones of Regulation focuses on identifying our feelings and how to regulate our feelings when we are unable to maintain focus in class or interact safely with others.
Most simply defined, regulation is to adjust, manage or control something so it works well. Regulation describes a person’s ability to adjust their state of alertness, energy level, and emotions to help them attain personal goals, meet the demands of the situation around them, and gain a sense of well-being. When we are regulated, our brain and body work together to manage the situation at hand. Why Teach Self-Regulation? Regulation is something everyone continually works on whether we are aware of it or not. We all come across trying circumstances that can test our limits. If we can recognize when we are becoming less regulated, we can do something about it to manage our feelings. This comes more naturally for some, but for others, it is a skill that needs more attention and practice. This is the goal of The Zones of Regulation. Sorting Our Emotions Into Four Zones Feelings are complicated. They come in different sizes, intensities, and levels of energy that are unique to our brains and bodies. To make them easier to talk about, think about, and regulate, The Zones of Regulation organizes our feelings, states of alertness, and energy levels into four coloured Zones – Blue, Green, Yellow, and Red. The simple, common language and visual structure of The Zones of Regulation helps make the complex skill of regulation more concrete for learners and those who support them. We learn to regulate our zones to meet our goals and task demands, as well as support our overall well-being. All the Zones are Okay A core belief of The Zones of Regulation is that all the zones are okay. We routinely experience several of the zones across a day. It’s critically important that we don’t convey the message that the Green Zone is the only acceptable zone to be in. Acknowledge, accept, and support these feelings, and never make anyone feel like the Green Zone is the norm. Around the school you will notice posters reflecting the four zones of regulation. Below is a poster teachers and students find useful when working with the zones and assisting our young people with managing their feelings in each zone when it is needed. |

On Wednesday this week, Robyn Filmer, Director of Music for the Festival of Music came to Ardtornish and assessed our choir. We were fabulous! We received an A for our choral sound, dynamics and song knowledge (deep understanding of what the songs are about). We scored a high B for lyrics, part singing and teamwork. We have 50 students in the 2024 choir!
Robyn’s comments – “Great singing today in your first rehearsal for the term. A confident team of singers with lots of potential. Well done on singing without books for some of the songs.”
Ardtornish has been participating in the Festival of Music for many many years. For some families, many generations too. The Festival itself has been going since 1891!
Our choir is looking forward to singing at The Adelaide Festival Theatre in September at the end of Term 3.
Four of our Year 6 students, Ava H, Jasmine G, Lucas M and Morgan T, have successfully auditioned to be part of the dance troupe and will perform for five of the concerts.
