Developing Confidence Through Performance
The Arts are highly valued at Ardtornish and we strive to provide students with additional opportunities to develop their confidence and self esteem by undertaking performances whenever an opportunity arises. Performing in public can be a challenging activity full of nerves and trepidation but doing so is a wonderful way of building one's sense of accomplishment. The choir has continued to develop over the past few years under the leadership of Anne O’Dea and students who join the choir gain a wonderfully rich experience by contributing to a group endeavour.
The school has a long history of involvement in the Festival of Music. This has enabled students to perform in our choir, play instruments on stage and be guest soloist singers. This year a fabulous group of Yr 3/4 and 4/5 students will be on stage doing a floor dance to the folk song ‘Wau Bulan’. Wau Bulan is a folk song and dance that originates from Malaysia. “Wau Bulan” describes the beauty of the Malaysian traditional Kite (wau) with a rounded bottom shaped like a half moon (bulan) as it flies up high in the sky. It is performed in the Dikir Barat style whereby performers sit in rows on the floor/stage to sing and do choreographed hand and body movements. The dance is spectacular as the students move in a highly synchronised manner. They have been practising their performance since the start of Term 2 and are becoming more skilled and confident as the big night approaches at the Festival Theatre. The students auditioned in June and Ardtornish is the only school to be performing twice, over the Festival of Music series of 10 concerts. Next photo in September will be from the stage! Chromebook use at home and Cyber Safety While chromebooks are on our school’s internet system all student activity is monitored to keep them safe and focussed on learning. However, once home students have the ability to access a wider range of sites. It is therefore essential that parents are vigilant about what their children are accessing and how long they are on their devices. Screen time needs to be balanced with other activities and it is recommended that chromebooks are not stored in students bedrooms but in a place in the home where parents can ensure they are being charged overnight and not being accessed at times when their children should be sleeping. Chromebooks are a learning tool and need to be used responsibly at all times. It is important for parents to understand what sites their children are joining and to make it clear that they need to follow age restrictions and to reinforce the fact that just because some of their friends may not be following guidelines that does not give them the right to do the same. |

Year 6 Boys and Girls On Monday August 8th teams from Ardtornish proudly represented our school in the SAPSASA Basketball Championships. Both teams had some wins with the boys also narrowly losing a game by 2points and drawing another. The following students Ashlee, Shantae, Indianna, Indi, Amy, Jasmine, Lillybelle, India, Taylor grew in confidence as the day progressed for the girls team. Jake, Max, Sam. Hugo, Ryder, Lucas, Seth and Jye made up the boys team who impressed with their tenacity against some particularly tall sides. It was my absolute pleasure to spend the day with these students a credit to themselves, their families and our school. Thanks also the many parents who helped us with transport and supporting our teams on the day. Special thanks to Leon Cooper for sharing the coaching role for the girls team. Deb Pryor |

Last week year’s 3/4/5 students attended swimming lessons at the Campbelltown ARC. The program acknowledges that in the time available they cannot turn students into proficient swimmers they place a focus on teaching them the skills, knowledge & understandings to make good decisions around water and keep themselves and others safe.
Students learnt how to do frog kicks, star floats, doggy paddle, survival breaststroke, pizza arms, to not wee in the pool, to stay afloat while fully clothed and how to be rescued. Some groups learnt how to put on and take off their life jackets in the water. Room 8 really loved their swimming lessons!
