“Old Worlds, New Worlds, Other Worlds” Book Week 2021Book Week (Tuesday August 24th to Friday 27th) was a celebration of the 2021 Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA) theme “Old Worlds, New Worlds, Other Worlds” and the wonderful notable and shortlisted books.
The library was decorated to reflect each of the 3 worlds, an Ancient Egyptian reading cave (Old Worlds), an alien visitor (New Worlds) and a display of the microworld (Other Worlds) of caterpillars and butterflies from Eric Carle’s “The Very Hungry Caterpillar”. Classes have been reading and discussing the 2021 CBCA books and the library quizzes and activities were all based on the books. Students enjoyed Kahoots online quizzes, fun problem-solving games and even a treasure hunt. It was decided not to have a Book Week assembly this year due to Covid restrictions but each class helped to create a fun music film based on the parody song “All About Those Books”, which again celebrated the CBCA books for 2021. Have a look at the film here. https://ardtornishpslibrary.weebly.com/ The Children’s Book Council of Australia, South Australian Branch were the host for the national CBCA Book of the Year Awards and created the movie that was seen all over the country. Some APS students are featured in this film. If you would like to watch it, it can be found here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xmpDNYYoHJg&t=1205s Perform Education On 11th of August “Perform Education” performed “Bigger, Better, Brighter!” highlighting the Book Week theme and some of the 2021 books and we were delighted to see an ex APS student Melissa as one of the “Perform Education” actors. Marion our Library Volunteer’s 80th Birthday Marion has been a long-term volunteer at our school library for the past 15years. She celebrated her 80th Birthday during Book Week and staff enjoyed sharing her special “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” birthday cake. |

Last Tuesday our choir left very early for the big rehearsal at the Entertainment Centre. We were there with over 1000 other singers and musicians. It was great being able to sing with the orchestra. There are nearly 80 musicians. Our soloists Gargee, Kamryn and Isabelle were fantastic! We are all very excited for our rehearsal and concert day next Tuesday in the Arena! As Father’s Day approaches here are some useful resources for fathers, grandads, uncles and any bloke in a young child’s life. They are all free:
Dad Play for those with 3-5 year old children DadPlay is a free telephone messaging service for fathers and father figures with 3-5 year olds. Messages are sent to dads’ phones for 3 months once they enrol. The messages provide information and practical advice to dads on positive activities and relationships with their child, about their child’s social skills and behaviour, and on family relationships. DadPlay focuses specifically on play and games between father and child. TO JOIN UP text ‘DadPlay’ to 0488 824 230 or visit: www.dadlab.com.au This site operates from the Uni of Newcastle and has other interesting resources including a ‘Fathers & School Readiness Webinar’ the presents evidence on how fathers’ play with children influences child development and socialisation. SMS4Dads for expecting fathers and those with infants SMS4dads provides new fathers with information and connections to online services through their mobile phones. The text messages with tips, information and links to other services help fathers understand and connect with their baby and support their partner. The expected date of delivery or date of birth, which is entered when you Join Up, ensure that the texts are linked to the developmental stage of the baby (from week 16 of the pregnancy until 24 weeks post birth). Many texts use the ‘voice’ of the baby, for example, ‘You can talk to me about anything dad. Your words will help my brain development’ Others suggest actions dads may like to take, for example, ‘Try to find ways to tell your partner she is doing an amazing job. This is really important and helps build her confidence.’ See: https://www.facebook.com/SMS4dads/ Being A Dad Course at the Children’s Centre In term four we will be holding Being A Dad session over three Wednesdays evening 3,10 and 17 November. In week 4, our class and Room 5B went on an excursion to the Farm Barn. First, we went on the bus and drove an hour to the Farm Barn. We listened to the rules and then got to explore the Barn. In the barn, we saw goats, cows, chickens, guinea pigs and lambs. We all had a go at bottle feeding the lambs.
Then, we met Cab Sav the cow. We all learnt how to milk Cab Sav and then watch how the machine milks cows these days. The farmer kept squirting the cow’s milk at us, it was funny. Next, we went into the park and met the Camel named Lulu. Everyone got to feed her carrots!
After that, we explored the wildlife park. We got to feed emus, kangaroos, ostriches, peacocks, goats, deer, miniature ponies and lots of different birds. We even got the emus to eat carrots from our heads!
Finally, we watched a reptile show. We met lizards, dragons and pythons. Everyone had a go at touching the python. It was scary. We had such a great time on our excursion and were all very tired at the end of the day.
