4th Annual Student Writers’ Week

Encouraging writing, by publishing and promoting, through the Library, the reading of student authored stories.

Our Annual “Student Writers’ Week”, celebrates students as authors and helps to build a school culture that values writing.  This year the theme is, “Let Dynamic Dialogue Drive Your Story.’ All students from year 4- 6, and some from year 3, have written books with a focus on the use of dialogue. The books  are on  display in the library, in Weeks 9 -10 of Term 3.
Students are encouraged to read each others books and to vote for their favourites. Nominated authors and those who nominate them then go into a prize draw at an assembly next term.
The standard of student books this year has been outstanding and students have shown growth in their ability to write stories rich in dialogue that can engage a reader. Here is an extract from a book, ‘Bag Full of Trouble,’ by a year six student, Eli Carter which is a wonderful example of dialogue as story telling.
’Oh hell, we are gonna get arrested for murder,’ said Jack.
‘Not if we escape out the window,’ said Eli.   ‘But we are on the fourth floor,’ said Sam.
Don’t worry there is a trampoline under our window that belongs to the kid on the bottom floor,’ said Jack, ‘Let’s jump.’
Using dialogue to tell the story is one of the ‘Seven Step’ procedures to improve writing.
Teachers have been using ‘Bump it up walls’ to support students to self-assess and set improvement goals for their writing. The Brightpath assessment tool, has also been used to celebrate what students can do as writers and identify skills they need to further develop to become more sophisticated writers.
‘Seven Steps’ is used as a framework to support students to plan and edit their writing, so it is more engaging for an audience.
The Seven Steps program supports students to:
1. Plan for Success – Planning their story before they started.
2. Use Sizzling Starts - Starting where the action was.
3. Tighten Tension - Putting detail in their story so the reader stay’s engaged
4. Create Dynamic Dialogue - Using dialogue to explain events in the story, fill in unknown facts and make their characters come alive as you hear their responses.
5. Show, Not Tell - Building information into their text to tell people about their character and events without directly telling them.
6. Ban the Boring Bits - Explaining how they took out, or left out, all the things that might make their story boring.
7. Create an Exciting Ending or Ending with a message (Coda) Explained how they developed a great ending to their story or a coda to explain its message.

Choir Performance
On Thursday 15 September, 13 of our Year 5 & 6 students performed on stage at the Adelaide Festival Theatre as part of the Public Primary Schools Festival of Music.
Our school was also represented by 30 students who were part of the Wau Bulan Dancers and Junk Squad.

The Primary Schools Festival of Music, an official state icon, and is custodian of an iconic South Australian tradition, we engage our students in artistic excellence, cultural diversity and social inclusion through performance in Music and the Arts.
This year the Festival’s 9 concerts feature Year 5 and 6 students. To commemorate this significant change, Annie Kwok wrote the song “Who Knows?”.
This year we commissioned Dan Walker to compose a set of four songs entitled “The Space Between Us”. It is not just about the space that exists above our heads, but the space all around us.
During the concerts there were a number of Guest Artists from public primary and secondary schools, other choir items that presented different musical genre, and two pieces that specifically showcased the talents of the orchestra.
It was a spectacular event that our students enjoyed being a part of.

The “Arts” curriculum, consists of Visual Art, Media Art, Music, Drama and Dance.  Each element is run over two years, e.g. year 1 and 2, year 3 and 4 and year 5 and 6.

Year 3 students in Room 27 have looked at the different techniques and visual arts practices artists use to create their artwork.  We have looked at different lines, colour and paper collage to create art.

After looking at and discussing the techniques Henri Mattise used to create art, students followed his paper collage technique to create their own version of his work.

Using white crayon, students then wrote the alphabet onto white paper and colour-washed it to show their writing below.

After listening to the Rainbow Serpent as part of their Aboriginal Studies, Room 27 students wrote a story review, discussing the main characters traits and meaning of the story.
Working with our Room 23 Foundation Buddy Class, the two classes created a giant Rainbow Serpent using crayon which then had a black colour wash applied.  The giant serpent can be seen slithering along the wall of the new East Building.
