Ardtornish Student Writers’ Week
Each year ‘Student Writer’s Week’ is held to celebrate and promote the writing skills of students from Yr 4- 6. This event provides students with the opportunity to publish a story in the library and to be celebrated as authors. Each year a particular focus is chosen in respect to the writing task.
This year the theme of the event was: An interesting complication makes a story engaging! Over the year students learned, through a series of explicit lessons, that every narrative needs to present the central character with a complication, they must overcome, and that readers usually only become engaged with stories and want to read them to the end if the complication is well developed.
Hence the student’s challenge this year was to choose a complication / problem for their character to overcome, that their readers would find interesting. The character could be a person, an animal or even an object like a pencil, tree or a toy. Students were asked to support the reader to follow the character as they cleverly worked to overcome the complication they faced. As a part of the festival students are encouraged to read each other’s books and nominate the one that they think had the best complication for a prize. Nomination forms go into a box in the library and a series of prizes are drawn at an assembly for both the author of the book and the person who nominates them. Over the next week, parents are invited to visit the library before or after school to see their child’s book on display and celebrate with them their achievement. Learning to write is an essential skill that supports the development of students thinking abilities and enhances their learning across all subject areas. Enjoying the act of writing is something that we strive to instill in all students. Silly Sock Day Raises Over $1000 for Xavier
On Wednesday, September 13, our school community came together for a heart-warming event – Silly Sock and Casual Clothes Day. The objective was simple: wear your most outrageously colourful and creative socks to school, all for a fantastic cause. Thanks to your overwhelming support, we are thrilled to announce that we raised just over $1000! This sum will go directly toward Xavier's much-needed treatment. It is a testament to the kindness and compassion that runs deep within our school community. |

10 students represented Ardtornish at the NFL Flag Tag Football State tournament. Ardtornish picked up the new game quickly and were able to go through the day undefeated, becoming State Champions. This means the 10 students and 2 adults get a trip to the Gold Coast next term to represent South Australia at the National Championships. The winner of this is invited to Orlando Florida to represent Australia in the international competition. The players worked extremely well together, playing their roles and running hard all day. Coach Shane Hatchard was impressed with the application of skills learnt in training sessions. 70% of our team scored Touchdowns, some scoring in the double digits. You will see them training hard leading up to the Nationals and we will update you on how they go. Ardtornishu Shimashou!
(Ardtornish, let’s go!) An exciting morning was had by Molly W, Abbie G, Harveen K and Aiden G as they battled against other schools in the North-East district to be the fastest to read Japanese Hiragana characters and words. This competition has been running for 16 years and the first competition was held here at Ardtornish. It is a fun and challenging way for students to demonstrate their skills in reading Japanese and our team certainly did us proud. Yoku dekimashita! (Well done!) From Krasnoff sensei. |

Festival of Music
Last Thursday 14th September, 40 of our students performed on stage at the Adelaide Festival Theatre as part of the Public Primary Schools Festival of Music. Our signing students were brilliant at the start of the concert signing Advance Australia Fair.
Our school was also represented by Ava, Jasmine and Lucas who were part of the troupe. The Primary Schools Festival of Music, an official state icon, and custodian of an iconic South Australian tradition, engages our students in artistic excellence, cultural diversity and social inclusion through performance in Music and the Arts. This year we commissioned Paul Jarman to compose a set of four songs entitled “World of Tomorrow”.
In this rapidly evolving modern world, it is hard to imagine that less than two hundred years ago there was no electricity, no running water or central heating and cooling. We lived without antibiotics and medicines. Cars, trucks, buses and planes were not yet invented. There were no telephones, let alone smart phones. While most of these differences have improved our lives, some haven’t. Many of these differences are greatly influencing our lives.
Are we heading the right way? The technology challenges of our changing world, form the theme of our four-part song cycle for the 2023 Festival of Music, “World of Tomorrow”

A Sizzling Success: A Big Thank You to Shane Hatchard and Mostyn Krollic
Our recent sausage sizzle fundraisers, aimed at supporting our beloved school garden, were an incredible success. We are thrilled to announce that we raised just under $2000, all thanks to the wonderful efforts of our volunteers, Shane Hatchard and Mostyn Krollic.
We are beyond grateful for the generosity and dedication of Shane and Mostyn, who generously donated their time and culinary skills to make our sausage sizzle events a roaring success. Their commitment to our school community shone brightly as they grilled over 1000 delicious sausages, ensuring that everyone was left with full bellies and happy hearts.
The funds raised during these sizzle events will play a crucial role in the running and resourcing of our school garden. As we all know, our garden is a vibrant and valuable learning space for our students, providing opportunities for hands-on education and nurturing a love for the environment. With these funds, we can continue to grow and enhance our garden, providing an even more enriching experience for our students.
On behalf of the Student Representative Council (SRC), we extend our sincere gratitude to Shane and Mostyn for their outstanding contribution to our school. Your support is not only appreciated but vital to the success of our school's initiatives.
Once again, a big thank you from the bottom of our hearts for making our sausage sizzle fundraisers a resounding success.
Warm regards, Mitchell F and Eli J - On behalf of the SRC
