Writing and Reading Celebrations
Weeks 3, 4 and 5 have been exciting times at Ardtornish. Six authors visited our school to speak to our students. South Australian authors Mike Dumbleton and Amanda Graham worked with the junior and middle primary students. They explained the ideas behind their books and Amanda demonstrated the skills of illustrating. Dan McGuiness, local graphic novelist and interstate authors Deborah Abela, Christine Harris and Michael Panckridge spoke to the middle and upper primary students. They shared insights into their craft and inspired students to write, draw and read books
It is important for children to learn from writers themselves, to understand that writing is a skill that can be learnt and that ideas for stories take work and rewriting. A real life meeting with an author inspires students to read their books and broadens reading interests.
The writers were all highly impressed by the student ambassadors who spent some of their day helping the authors to move around the school and took care of them between class visits. I have had many emails from the writers praising all the children and the school. Even their literary agent sent a glowing review of the ambassadors and Ardtornish Primary. Thank you to our ambassadors, Imogen J (room 7), Charlotte S, Ethan M (room 8),Karah G, Jada R (room 9), Mia H (room 10), Samantha M (room 11), Maddison H (room 20), Kayla T, Taneisha M (room 22), Tayla T (room 24) Alex R (room 27), Rayyan P, Sam J, Max J (room 29), Georgia D, Erin M, Jess F (room 30) and Abby S (room 31),who did a wonderful job representing our school. Week 5, Book Week, is a national celebration of children’s literature. Our students have been reading the Children’s Book Council of Australia’s notable books and shortlisted books since March. The yearly winners are announced in August and libraries and book stores all over Australia are decorated in the year’s theme, “Find Your Treasure”. In our library we used treasure and pirate ideas and incorporated J M Barrie’s book “Peter Pan”, as the play of the book will be performed by six classes in term 4. Students have been excited by the many displays and activities in the library and each class had their own special time to participate in quizzes and treasure hunts and enjoy the books. Many children also contributed to the yearly art competition, based on our themed displays. There has been recent discussion about Book Week and the focus on children wearing costumes and parading rather than a focus on the books. At Ardtornish the classes emphasize the books and the Book Week theme and use only minimal props and costuming, often hand made at school by the children themselves. Our Book Week assembly highlights the books and the “treasure” theme and gives students an opportunity to perform rather than “parade”. It a chance for our school to come together and share a love of books and Book Week and the joy of reading. All of these events support the learning outcomes in our school, the improvement of writing and reading, which are fundamental skills for all subjects, from mathematics and science to the arts and they encourage students to be writers, readers and passionate learners.
