Ard-Rocket Pedal Prix Results
On Friday the 21st of Sept the Ard-Rocket Pedal Prix team made their annual journey to Murray Bridge to participate in a 24-hour endurance race. On Friday we set up our pit area and ensured the bike was ready to race safely. After strict scrutineering we practiced for an hour and a half and this gave us our grid position. Hamish S posted our fastest lap and won us the right to start the race at 12 noon on Saturday.
Our team began the race with no issues, while the team next door went through tyres, like they were growing on trees, due to punctures from three corner jacks. The team settled into a nice rhythm and the riders showed amazing commitment and strength to keep the bike going in quite warm conditions. Overnight saw some fantastic riding and Charlie R, with a little incentive from mum, the promise of a Nintendo switch, pumped out 8 of his best laps in a row. The rest of the team inspired by this, gritted their teeth and put in a tremendous effort to keep the bike going overnight. After I took a quick nap, at the back of the pit lane, it was morning and even though there were lots of tired legs everyone maintained their commitment and did a fantastic job to keep the bike moving. We completed 267 laps over the course of the race which was a huge improvement on the previous year’s score.
As the team manager, I couldn’t be prouder of the team and all they have achieved over the years as they made massive strides in fitness and their ability to work as a team, persevere and support each other. To the kids leaving I hope to see you at the track next year. Keep working at your goals because you have shown what you can accomplish, no matter how much it hurts, when you work as great team members. I look forward to the team improving even more in 2019. Jack Richardson Team Manager Ardtornish Governing Council – Vacant Position
The Governing Council has recently had a parent representative position become available as a member has moved schools. If you are interested in joining the Governing Council on a short term basis then please email us on [email protected] (positions are filled at our AGM at the beginning of each year).
Being on the Council is a great way to develop a broader insight into how our school operates and help make a difference. Please contact the front office with any questions and they will pass your details on to me. Thanks Danielle, Governing Council Chairperson New Line Markings Create More Playground Fun
Bright and exciting activities were painted in the junior primary playground and on the primary courts during the school holidays.
Elite Marking painted a multipurpose court and maze on the primary courts next to the school library. Two, four square courts, an alphabet snake, 1-100 grid, two hopscotch games and two basketball keys were painted in the junior primary yard. Many students are already using these fantastic games! Your generous donations, from past casual clothes days, have funded this project in partnership with OSHC |

Year 8 Preparation Day
On Friday 2nd November our Year 7 students will attend the Year 8 Preparation Day to be held at Modbury South Primary School. This will be the 3rd Preparation Day Ardtornish students have attended, however the event now involves all Primary Schools in our Partnership. Students are provided the opportunity to meet and get to know other Year 7s who will be going to the same school. High school personnel also attend the day to meet students who are coming their way. During the day Year7s participate in team building activities run by ‘Beyond Limits’. Through these activities students can talk about any questions and feelings they have re starting high school. Last term the Year 8 Preparation Day program won the 2018 Schools Ministries Group Celebrating Community Award We acknowledge and appreciate the great organisational work of Tracey Cooper our Pastoral Care worker in collaborating with SMG and other organisations to ensure the smooth running of the day. Children’s Week
Children's Week is celebrated nationally in October. At Ardtornish we will celebrate Children's week during Week 3, Monday Oct 29th to Friday Nov 2nd. This week highlights the right of children to enjoy their childhoods. Each year there is a focus on a particular right a child has, as described in the United Conventions on the “Rights of the Child”. This year the focus is on article 12: A Child’s Right to Speak. To foster this right the SRC will be asking students their opinions on “What makes our school awesome”. Their responses will be recorded on stickers and put on posters to be displayed around the school. A timetable of the events running during Week 3 are listed below. Our main activities include:

Room 7 & 8 Museum Excursion
What a fun and rewarding day out! At the end of last term, Room 7 & 8 visited the South Australian Museum for a special workshop to support our classroom STEM learning. We also really enjoyed viewing the National Geographic Nature Photographer of the Year exhibition. Helping us were co-educators Shenae Walker and Sue Belshaw, and two parent volunteers, Anne-Marie Russell and Michael Sneyd.
Students explored the Biodiversity Gallery in a special hands-on session looking for South Australian dragon lizards. They used large scale 3D printed skulls to learn about the cutting edge scanning and printing technology being used by the SA Museum and University of Adelaide PhD student Jaimi Gray to quantify skull shape and help answer some puzzling biological questions.
Students found the photographic exhibition refreshing and inspirational. They quietly wandered and sat, using the photographs to inspire a short text and/or sketch.
During our visit, SA Museum director Brian Oldman was giving the Minister of Education, John Gardner a tour, and they spent a little time observing our classes. Both took some time to chat with students and teachers and were very complimentary about the students’ behaviour and were impressed by their focus on the learning activities.
