Proudly Publishing and Sharing Writing

Students develop a stronger sense of themselves as writers when they have opportunities to publish their work for a genuine audience.

At present a major display of student made books is on show in the library and parents are invited to drop in and have a look at the great stories students have written. Students from years 3 upwards made individual books while students in the early years contributed to class books.

Ask your child to share their book with you if you have not yet heard their story.

Our library has now established a dedicated "Student Author" section where students can read each other’s stories and be encouraged to submit their own writing, in book form, when it has been fully edited and polished.
In this section, posters are displayed giving advice about the writing process from student authors. In this way students can share with each other what they have learned by going through the writing and editing process.
Some student responses included:
  • Good grammar really helps to make your story great - Cobey
  • Stories don’t make sense without correct punctuation - Jack
  • Hard work makes a great book - Erin
  • It’s important to plan before you write - Jayde
  • The more you read other’s books the better yours will get - Aria
  • Restarting a story can be a really good thing - Isabel
  • The more you describe the scene the easier it is to see the scene - Charli
  • Showing not telling is important and funny endings make stories great - Harry
  • Only put in what is important - Tammy
  • Editing your work pays off when you have a good story at the end - Lachlan
  • If you believe you can finish a story you will, but if you always put your story down you won’t get a good story -Danika
  • The more time you spend writing the more interesting the story - Rhys
  • Don’t use the same words too many times. Don’t be repetitive - Oscar W
  • Change your title to something remarkable to intrigue readers
  • and get their attention - Kai
  • I have learned to express myself through my writing with help from peer, parent and teacher feedback - Karel
  • I am proud that I created a published narrative and now I have a passion for writing and editing - Chelsea
  • It is helpful having other people help to edit your story -  Lucas

On this day staff will review the school’s performance data, reflect on the effectiveness of our programs and plan new initiatives for 2020 to further improve student learning outcomes. The latest External Review Report for our school is now available from our website. This report was very positive and highlighted the effectiveness of our school’s teaching program.

Student Banking Helpers Wanted
We are looking for a couple of volunteers who would like to help process the Commonwealth Student Banking on Thursday mornings.  Bank bags are sent up from classrooms, and banking helpers process the transactions, count the money and take it to the bank. It takes about one hour, but would need to be regularly on a Thursday morning. Please check with Cathie in the front office if you would like some more information, or would like to help.

Reason 1:     Nearly one in every eight road deaths in South Australia is a pedestrian. In addition to fatalities there are on average just under 100 pedestrians seriously injured as well as many more who receive minor injuries each year.
Reason 2:     Your child will learn about pedestrian safety by watching you, so use safe behaviour around cars, roads, footpaths and car parks. Always stop, look, listen and think before crossing a road, and use pedestrian crossings wherever possible. Always cross at the safest point, even if you have to walk further out of your way and if you’re crossing at the lights, wait for the green man!
Reason 3:     The Queensland Centre for Accident Research and Road Safety recently conducted an Australia-wide survey of parents focused on keeping kids safe around roads and cars. They found until the age of NINE, children’s perceptual and cognitive abilities are not sufficiently developed to enable them to make sound judgments when crossing roads. Holding hands with your children is the best way to keep them safe around a school crossing.
Reason 4:     The Australian Road Rules states that a pedestrian within 20 metres of a crossing (including a school crossing) must use it to cross the road.
The fine is over $100 that can be issued by SA Police for failing to cross within 20 metres of the school crossing. So keep an eye out for any hazards and keep holding hands until you’re all safely in the school yard or in the car.

Next week, on Wednesday 20th November we will be having school crossing training. Any students who are 10 Years of age by this date of the training session will be provided with school crossing training so they can be ready to begin monitor duty at the beginning of 2020. This service builds students’ self-esteem, sense of responsibility and community mindedness.
